Like arugula, this bright purplish red radicchio has a slightly peppery and bitter taste. It is loaded with nutrients and has no fat or cholesterol. The salad, a perfect blend of sweet, sour, salty and bitter, tastes so crispy, really flavourful, and easy to throw together.

Orange VinaigretteSalad
  • 60 ml Orange juice
  • 2 tbsp White balsamic vinegar
  • 80 ml Olive oil
  • 2 tsp Dijon mustard
  • 2 tsp Honey
  • 1 tbsp Sesame seeds, roasted
  • Freshly ground black pepper and salt, to taste
  • 1/2 Radicchio, torn into bite-sized pieces
  • 100 g Gorgonzola, cubed
  • 1 handful Arugula leaves
  • 100 g White grapes, seedless
  • 1/4 Mango, diced
  • 1 tbsp Sundried tomatoes, diced
  1. In a small jar with a tight-fitting cover, combine all vinaigrette ingredients. Cover and shake well until blended. To store, refrigerate for up to 1 week. Shake well before serving.
  2. Combine all salad ingredients in a large salad bowl.Toss with orange vinaigrette. Serve with a glass of Chardonnay for a pleasant and light lunch.

How pretty! A wonderful example of how a salad can be way more than iceberg lettuce. Thanks!

@Anonymous Belle, yes, the flavour would be different though...well, it won't hurt to experiment with other types of acids. Maybe it would even turn out better. You can use vinaigrette in different kinds of salads (I like them simply with lollo roso, arugula, or iceberg)...or cut down the quantity and make the half.

Angie, I am so using your orange vinaigrette here. Seriously! I just recently turned vegan and I'm soooo in need of new recipes. I've been looking here and there and now I am on your site for a long time!!! Goodness, can I just have you as my personal chef? Anyways, did I mention that I tried your olive and milt pesto? My gosh! I SOOOOOO SOOOO LOVED IT! I am growing mint and have used your recipe twice. Amazing as usual! LOVED IT! Thanks, Angie!

I wish various greens like raddichio were easier to find around here. As it is, I can only find them in mixed salad greens, I can't just buy them on their own. Wish I could make your lovely salad!

Gorgonzola is one of my favourites. Having it in such a fresh salad sounds amazing. I have always loved the peppery-ness of arugula, but not the bitterness of radicchio. I suppose one can just leave it out, the other ingredients would more than compensate for the loss.

Ma What's For Dinner 3/10/11 17:01

Elisabeth 3/10/11 18:16

I absolutely love your radicchio, gorgonzola salad, Angie! The orange vinaigrette is so perfect to cut the bitterness of the radicchio, and the sharpness of the cheese, to mellow, and balance the two. Yumm!

BTW-Did you purposely want the title spelled the way you did?...Shouldn't it be RADICCHIO?...(here I am, meddling again)...sorry if I'm wrong!
