This simple and colourful quinoa salad is ridiculously good for you, tasty, versatile and so simple to prepare with cherry tomatoes, fruits and herring roe. It's perfect for potluck or anytime really!
Herring roe is in truth the milets, which is from male fish, in other words, it's herring sperm. Leave it out if you are a vegetarian.

  • 180 g Quinoa
  • 480 ml Water
  • 2 tbsp Herring roe
  • 250 g Fresh fruit, diced
  • 50 g Cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 2 stalk Green onions, chopped
  • 50 ml Extra-virgin olive oil
  • 2 Limes, juiced
  • 2 tsp Cumin powder
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Chilli flakes
  1. Bring quinoa and water to a boil in a saucepan. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer until quinoa is tender and water has been absorbed, about 15 minutes. Set aside to cool.
  2. Whisk olive oil, lime juice, cumin, salt, and chilli flakes together in a bowl.
  3. Combine quinoa, tomatoes, diced fruits, and green onions together in a salad bowl. Pour dressing over quinoa mixture. Toss to coat and season with salt and black pepper. Serve immediately.

Herring roe sounds... interesting! I don't think we'd find it here, so I will substitute haloumi when I make this delicious salad.

Rosa's Yummy Yums 29/4/13 07:51

Ann@Anncoo Journal 29/4/13 10:37

Ilke 29/4/13 12:33

I would go for quinoa salad anytime. I might leave roe out though. I am not vegetarian but I guess it is more of a texture thing. But you are right, with simple herbs and tomatoes, this is a nice, filling salad! Thanks :)

Ridwan@Riceandcoconut 29/4/13 12:34

Simple and unique, honestly i never have roe, very healthy salad indeed !

Sam @ My Carolina Kitchen 29/4/13 12:34

kitchen flavours 29/4/13 12:54

Hi Angie,
A lovely beautiful salad! I have never had caviar before, always wondering how they actually taste like!

glutwin 29/4/13 12:58

Oh this is a beautiful display of culinary art at its very best...such pops of color and texture here...not to mention nutritive value!!...Two questions for you Angie...1) Which "fruits" do you recommend here in this salad to compliment the herring roe? and 2) I presently have no herring roe.,..but a small jar of black "oeufs de lompe" in the fridge here on the Swiss/French border...Should I wait until I can find the "real deal"?...Is it very difficult to find or dauntingly expensive?

Guru Uru 29/4/13 13:30

Lovely quinoa salad my friend :)

Cheap Ethnic Eatz 29/4/13 18:17

What an unusual salad. herring roe and fruit? I have trouble placing herring roe flavor wise right now off the top of my head. But I'll try it :-) A handful of crumbled feta would be nice as well.

Velva 29/4/13 20:08

I have not made the leap as yet and tried roe-In your salad I might just do it.

Angie Schneider 29/4/13 20:17

@glutwinI have used a mix of pear and mango. They went really well with crunchy, mildly salted caviar. The herring roe ain't expensive and I am sure that your black lumpfish caviar would work just great.

Priya Suresh 29/4/13 20:46

Very interesting and delicious a delicious salad.

Geni 29/4/13 21:21

Angie this looks great and I love quinoa!

Anonymous 29/4/13 21:57

Karen (Back Road Journal) 29/4/13 22:14

This is such an unusual sounding salad...it must have a lovely texture between the quinoa and the roe.

SavoringTime in the Kitchen 29/4/13 22:19

I can imagine how tasty the salty roe would be in this salad of sweet fruit and savory vegetables! What a unique and lovely salad. I'm planning on making quinoa tonight as a side for our stir-fry :)

Ooh, a nice savoury treat.
