Homemade banana bread is one of life’s simple pleasures. It's sweet, tender and delicious. However, classic banana bread is usually loaded with refined sugar and calorie dense. This quick bread is made with freshly milled wholegrain spelt flour, homemade applesauce and naturally sweetened with very ripe bananas and honey, and it tastes as flavourful and supermoist as a traditional one and no-one will guess it’s better for you.

  • 220 g Wholegrain spelt flour
  • 1 tsp Baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp Cinnamon powder
  • A pinch of nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp Pure vanilla powder
  • 1/3 tsp Sea salt
  • 235 g Mashed bananas (2 large ripe bananas)
  • 150 g Unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 Eggs, medium
  • 120 g Honey
  • 80 ml Milk (I used coconut milk)
  • 100 g Hazelnuts (or nuts of your choice)
  1. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F. Line a 9x5-inch loaf pan with baking paper or grease with oil.
  2. Whisk together the whole spelt flour, baking soda, cinnamom, nutmeg, vanilla powder, and sea salt in a mixing bowl.
  3. Mash the bananas in another bowl, then add in applesauce, eggs, honey, and milk. Mix until well combined.
  4. Add the flour mixture into the banana mixture and mix with a spatula or spoon until everything is well combined. Now fold in the hazelnuts.
  5. Spread the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Bake in the middle of hot oven for 55-60 minutes until a wood skewer inserted in the center comes out clean with only a few small moist crumbs.
  6. Remove from the oven and allow the bread to cool completely in the pan on a wire rack before slicing and serving.

  2. Very comforting and fragrant I bet, bananas and honey are my fave ingredients. We do not have apfel sauce here but I imagine I would love it as well. It easily replaces eggs in cakes and muffins like these, so that is great in my book.

  9. Wow, another winner! The spelt flour must bring a level of nuttiness that works well with banana. I bet it would be fantastic toasted with luscious butter spread on it.

  21. The applesauce and ripe bananas naturally sweeten the bread, so I think we won’t miss the refined sugar at all. Nice
